Before the release of the new monochrome Black Bay, the Lingqian 39 was considered the best alternative to the Calendarless Ghost. But now, it looks like this title might be up for grabs. The reason for this is mainly based on three points: firstly, from a positioning perspective, whether it is TUDOR or Rolex, the two major brands of diver’s watches are categorized into high and low tiers based on their waterproof ratings. The equivalent of the Rolex Submariner Calendarless Ghost in the Black Bay series represents this level.

The Rolex Submariner, with a water resistance of 300 meters, is the standard model for the entire diving range. The Sea-Dweller, with a water resistance of 1,220 meters, is the “Advanced” version of Rolex‘s diver’s watches. The 11,000-meter water-resistant Deepsea is the “top-end” class of Rolex‘s diver’s watches. Dividing the series by waterproof depth illustrates its hierarchical positioning strategy.

The same applies to TUDOR diver’s watches: the standard Black Bay is water-resistant to 200 meters. The “Advanced” model, with a titanium case and ceramic insert, increases water resistance to 500 meters (except for some models). Therefore, the Black Bay is positioned similarly to the Rolex Sea-Dweller. Although the brand has never officially acknowledged this comparison, it’s clear that the “Advanced” TUDOR diver’s watches are not on the same level as the standard Rolex models. Meanwhile, the Black Bay, positioned as an entry-level option, is effectively the true “sibling” to the Calendarless Ghost.
