Regarding watches, except for a very small number of groups, I believe that most people buy them for commuting and wear them. That said, consumers are still very concerned about one issue: the value retention rate, much like when buying a car.
Recently, I saw that some Japanese media conducted a statistical analysis of watch price information published by popular watch websites in China. They found about 5,000 styles with both brand pricing and actual selling price from e-commerce platforms for the estimation of the value retention rate and obtained the following ranking list.
To strictly define the degree of value retention involves a wide range, so the origin of this list was first simplified to use the actual selling price of the watch to remove the pricing by brand. This approach allows for an average data point to determine whether the watch retains its value. Of course, the new watch discount for each brand is difficult to actuary due to different standards, so the formula of selling price removal of pricing was still used. This allows each brand to obtain an approximate value retention ranking under the same benchmark.
It can be seen from this list that the value retention of Rolex is undoubtedly the champion of the watch world, with a level of nearly 90%. Perhaps we have seen too many examples of Submariner, Daytona, or GMT-Master II popular models and might think that buying Rolex is a way to earn money, with the possibility of making a few percent as soon as you change hands.
However, if you look at the average level, the value retention rate of Rolex is not more than 100%, as exaggerated as it may sound. It can only be said that the depreciation rate of buying Rolex is not as high. As can be seen from the list, the first-place Rolex and the last-place FM have twice as much value retention, and from this relative comparison, it still shows why everyone thinks it is worth buying a Rolex watch.
The top 10 of the list shows that the Rolex Group is the most impressive, and the big independent brands such as AP and PP also occupy the second and fourth places (by impression, PP will be ahead of AP), while Richemont has four brands on the list, with Vacheron Constantin in fifth place.
For now, aside from the crazy speculation, more than 99% of the remaining watches will depreciate, and when the bubble blown by speculators will burst, neither you nor I know. I’m afraid the bitter one will be the last person to pick up. Like it is the best reason to buy a watch.
