In 1968, the Apollo 8 mission successfully completed the first orbit around the moon in human history. This was also the first time humans saw the far side of the moon. On this groundbreaking mission, the three astronauts were equipped with Omega Speedmaster watches. The Speedmaster watch is the designated equipment for all NASA manned space missions and is also the watch equipment trusted by astronauts in all missions of the moon landing program.
Today, the famous Swiss professional watchmaking brand OMEGA launches the new Speedmaster series “Dark Side of the Moon” Apollo 8 watch, which uses cutting-edge technology, rich materials, and excellent watchmaking technology to pay tribute to mankind’s first flight around the moon. In 2018, Omega launched the Speedmaster “Dark Side of the Moon” Apollo 8 watch to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission.
The movement plywood has been blackened and embossed with the texture of the lunar surface using laser ablation technology. At the same time, the front and back of the movement show the effect of two sides of the moon, which is unique.
The front side shows the front side of the moon (near the Earth) that people can observe from the Earth, and the back side shows the “dark side” (far side) of the moon that only astronauts have seen. Exquisite laser engraving technology and contrasting effects make the lunar texture of the new watch clearer. The gold-plated balance wheel appears in dark gray and complements the light gray gears.
In addition, the 3869 manual winding movement has passed the Master Chronometer certification approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) and has reached higher standards in the industry in terms of accuracy, anti-magnetic properties, and overall performance.
