The second leg of the expedition under the Pole and DeepLife was a great success in the Canary Islands. With the support of Rolex’ Perpetual Planet Initiative, divers are able to dive to greater depths. Determining depth is a key element in species conservation and an important consideration in the creation of a marine national park in Gran Canaria.

Founded by Ghislain Bardout and Emmanuelle Périé-Bardout, Beneath the Pole is launching its second Deep-Sea Life expedition in the Canary Islands. The expedition team aims to advance scientific knowledge about the “forest of marine animals” in the Mesophotic Zone (30 to 200 meters underwater). “Marine animal forest” refers to a three-dimensional structure made up of stationary animal communities such as corals and sponges.

Just 100 meters from Lanzarote’s lively beaches lies a thriving forest of marine animals. Protected by the European Union’s ban on deep-sea trawling for nearly two decades, the area is the most intact forest of marine animals ever discovered by the Under The Pole expedition.

For more than a decade, Ghislain Bardout, co-founder of Beneath the Pole, and Emmanuelle Périé-Bardout have been contributing to marine conservation through their work in marine science with the support of Rolex. As the latest expedition in the Beneath the Pole series, the Deep-Sea Life program aims to explore the Mesophotic Zone, 30 to 200 meters below sea level, to investigate the marine animal forest in detail.
