In 2009, Breitling independently built its first movement – Breitling‘s self-made 01 movement. The design of the movement starts from scratch, embodying Breitling‘s more than 100 years of exquisite craftsmanship, focusing on every detail. Its functionality, interaction of components, aesthetics, and ease of maintenance have become the industry benchmark for chronograph movements. Shortly after its launch, this excellent movement added more complex functions, including dual time zone function, world time display, and even split-seconds function. It already has the most difficult complex timing function in the watchmaking industry.

Breitling‘s in-house movements undergo strict quality control procedures. The movement took ten months to produce and went through thousands of tests before it could be certified by the Swiss Official Observatory (COSC). Breitling uses the same rigorous 16-year accelerated aging test for its self-made movements, including impact testing (approximately 60,000 500G impacts), crown testing (more than 100,000 crown winding times), and pendulum winding (3,456,000 pendulum winding times), and chronograph button test (approximately 5,840 “start, stop, return to zero” engagements). Only after passing all tests can a Breitling watch leave the chronometer workshops.

We have a full range of movements, from simple three-hand movements and chronograph movements to movements with extremely complex functions such as split-seconds, full calendar, and tourbillon. We also have a non-mechanical movement, the patented SuperQuartz™ movement. The movement manufacturing process is extremely complex. Only one Breitling self-made 01 movement has as many as 346 parts, which are carefully assembled and calibrated by hand in the Breitling Precision Timepiece Workshop.

Since movement manufacturing is time-consuming and laborious, we outsource the production of some entry-level and highly specialized movements so that we can continue to meet the market demand for watches and maintain high standards. Whether it is a Breitling-made movement or a movement supplied by a partner, each movement must be certified by the Swiss Official Observatory (COSC).
