Cloche de Cartier: A storied history, in a world of traditional watchmaking dominated by circles, Cartier stands out with its square, rectangular, and oval shapes. In 1904, the Santos de Cartier watch was introduced; with the launch of the Tank in 1917, Cartier continued to explore geometric designs and create a minimalist style.
Cloche de Cartier watches are rare. Legend has it that they were made for the stylish gentleman who often appeared in the Café Society or at the racetrack, but over the years, they have evolved, with two design options coming to the fore: the arch of the case facing upwards or to the side. The newer models come with a strap and add another feature: the 12 o’clock position is pointed towards the finger and is placed horizontally or vertically on the table like a “miniature desk clock.”
Cartier reintroduced the watch in the Louis Cartier collection (launched in 1981). By the end of the 80s, Cartier had released several new models with quartz movements, including the first gold model with a leather strap, or new models with precious dials, “rice” metal bracelets, oval moilloched bracelets, or colored leather straps.
