Description
When the solution is added, the ceramic is heated to more than 1,600 degrees Celsius to become strong and achieve the desired color. During this heating process, the ceramic becomes dense, and the added compounds react with the basic elements of the red Cerachrom bezel to create the final azure blue shade.
This might seem straightforward, but there are several technical challenges that need to be addressed: first, the original compound solution that changes red to blue; instead, an appropriate amount of solution is added evenly; then ensure that the two color areas are distinct and the boundary is clear and precise; the actual heating time and temperature are then determined to prevent distortion of the entire piece. All of these factors are crucial to the success of the process and the quality of the final product.
Innovation is part of Rolex‘s heritage. At the beginning of the 20th century, only large marine chronometers could accurately keep time, and in 1914, Rolex became the first watch brand to receive “A” chronometer certification from the prestigious Kew Observatory in the United Kingdom. Although the idea of a waterproof and dustproof watch was unimaginable at the time, in 1926 Rolex created the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, the Oyster, and showcased it in a water-filled fish tank in a shop window.
