The Cartier Tank is seen as the height of Cartier’s elegance with its simple and precise lines, and at this year’s Watches & Wonders Haute Horlogerie in Shanghai, Cartier also introduced the new TANK collection, which continues the rectangular look of the model. Among the many new TANK watches, there is also a series of new TANK LOUIS CARTIER watches that are even more refined.
In 1917, Louis Cartier was inspired by the top-down view of a tank and incorporated its shape into the design of the watch, creating the TANK, a classic series of watches with vertical lugs on both sides representing the tank tracks and the case representing the tank’s chassis. Louis Cartier also reshaped the watch with clean lines at that time, and the TANK LOUIS CARTIER watch we’re introducing today can be seen as a part of the Tank watch family—a sub-series. The Tank, soon after its launch, evolved into a richer style. In 1922, Louis Cartier redesigned it, stretching the case so the lugs became more slender and delicate, giving birth to the Tank L.C. (Louis Cartier abbreviation).
The case is made of 18-carat yellow gold, with polished vertical lugs on both sides, rounded corners, and a brushed front. The case measures 33.7 x 25.5 mm and is 6.6 mm thick. On the other side of the watch is a sapphire cabochon, a signature feature of Cartier, with a raised point around the crown for better grip and adjustment.
When you look at the watch from the dial, the first thing you notice is the layers of rectangles surrounding it, which make the gold sword-shaped hands and brand logo in the center of the dial stand out. Cartier’s use of color, combining the classic red with the gold case, presents an elegant look and subtly highlights the clean lines of the watch.
