The Rotonde de Cartier Grisaille Grey Enamel is an old enamel painting technique known for its black, white, and grey tones, which look like a delicate painting done by an engraver.
Just like in oil painting, black acts as the background and highlight for white. A shiny black enamel coating is applied to the dial and fired in a furnace. After that, the white Limoges enamel is carefully painted on step by step using a brush—a process that requires six to eight different firing stages. The enamel painting on this watch took almost 40 hours to finish.
In this way, the master enamel artist captures the subtle changes in the white areas, emphasizing the contrast with the dark parts and the three-dimensional effect of the painting, showing shifts in brightness. Using a special tool, he scrapes the white areas to enhance the realism of the animal’s fur.
The picture gradually appears, featuring a fantastic tiger motif on the dial of this Rotonde de Cartier, a miniature masterpiece created using Cartier’s signature animal-themed jewelry techniques. The watch is limited to 100 pieces.
