Cartier unveils the new Rotonde de Cartier, a master artist who has perfected the art of reflecting light and contrasts, resulting in three-dimensional and transparent paintings. The utmost attention to detail makes this watch a masterpiece of fine woodworking. Each dial is unique and takes more than 160 hours to complete through a series of steps. Measuring 42 mm in 18-carat white gold, this timepiece features a jumping hour function and a brown bear motif. Wood marquetry and a harmonious color palette bring the pattern to life.
According to the design pattern, the parquet selects the right wood based on the desired color, grain, and material. To inlay the bear’s fur, ten different natural woods from Europe are used, such as holly, chestnut, poplar, willow, silver maple or red maple, walnut or burr walnut, patterned maple, and Alin mountain olive. The 38 pieces of wood that make up the dial are cut into tiny pieces, some of which need to be darkened to create a three-dimensional effect of light and shadow.
Next, the pieces of wood are pasted one by one onto the dial. Powered by the hand-wound mechanical calibre 9905 MC with jumping hours, this timepiece is the result of a close collaboration between artists and master watchmakers, combining skills from different fields with Haute Horlogerie complications.
