As we all know, Rolex itself does not produce tourbillon watches. But in September 2018, at the request of a customer in Qatar, Switzerland tuning studio Label Noir launched the first Rolex tourbillon watch in history, based on the Milgauss Ref. 116400. More recently, Label Noir has released its first Rolex Daytona Tourbillon Custom, a modification of Ref. 116520.

This unique timepiece is custom-made and will be delivered to customers after four exhibitions in Geneva, Paris, Saint-Tropez, and Monaco. Until then, the watch was kept in the safe custody of watchmaker Emmanuel Curti. Emmanuel Curti is a member of the prestigious Société Suisse de Chronométrie (SSC) association and CEO of Label Noir.

The prototype of the modification is a discontinued Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 116520, which is entirely the property of the bespoke customer. In accordance with the customer’s wishes, Label Noir has added a tourbillon function to Caliber 4130 at 6 o’clock. After the successful transplantation, the small seconds dial at 6 o’clock on the dial disappeared to make room for the tourbillon cage, which rotated once a minute and was decorated with the words “LN,” the initials of Label Noir.

The challenge for Label Noir was to preserve as many of the original parts of the watch as possible. Label Noir completely dismantled the Caliber 4130 movement, removing 61 parts that were already useless, especially those related to the small seconds at 6 o’clock. At the same time, 93 parts were added relating to the tourbillon and its cage. In addition, the barrel power has been increased to drive the tourbillon, and the movement frequency has been reduced from 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) to 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz).
