Long before it was launched into space and entered the annals of horological history as the first watch to be worn on the moon, the Omega Speedmaster was designed for activities more suited to the ground, specifically as a timing tool for automobile races. Produced in partnership with the Porsche Club of America, this recently released limited edition watch revisits its racing history while adding some unique modern touches.
Limited to just 99 pieces, the Omega Speedmaster Moon Gray Side Edition Porsche Club of America can be considered a double tribute, as 2017 marks the 60th anniversary of the Speedmaster and the Porsche Club of America. Not only does this watch inherit the racing-inspired appeal of its launch in 1957, just before the moon landing, it also incorporates unmistakable Porsche sports car DNA and even some references to the Speedmaster’s history of space exploration.
In fact, the base model is actually the Speedmaster Moon Gray Side first released in 2014, with its plasma-treated brushed gray ceramic case and ceramic-finish grade 5 titanium dial designed to evoke the surface of the moon. It turns out that gray ceramic is also the material of choice for high-performance sports car brakes; on Porsche sports cars, the visual calipers of these brakes are yellow. Therefore, the limited edition watch features yellow details, including the hands, hour markers, tachymeter scale bezel, and the stitching on the gray leather strap. Incidentally, the ceramic titanium used for the dial is also used in the exhaust system of the Porsche 911 Turbo.
